لكن يبدو أن الشجرة النادرة التي تنتج “الراتنج”، أو مادة العود، ستبقى الأغلى في العالم، بسبب الإقبال الكبير على دهن العود، بالخصوص في منطقة الخليج وشبه القارة الهندية.
والعود، هو راتنج قاتم اللون موجود بقلب خشب نبات جنس العود، والاسم العلمي له “Aquilaria” وهي أشجار دائمة الخضرة ومعمرة، قد يصل ارتفاعها إلى عشرين مترا، وموطنها الأصلي جنوب شرق آسيا.
ويحتوي العود على زيوت نفاذة، تتكون بسبب إصابة الشجرة بنوع من العفن، يصيب قلبها ويأتي بلون شاحب وخفيف نسبيا.
وعند تقدم العدوى تنتج الشجرة الراتنج العطري القاتم اللون، ردا على الهجوم، مما يجعل هذا الخشب كثيف جدا وداكن اللون، ويسمى هذا الراتنج بالعود.
وينبغي عدم الخلط بينه وبين ‘البخور“، الذي ينتج من لحاء شجر العود المميز، الذي تعتبر الهند موطنه الأصلي، ويتغذى من طفيليات تتغذى على إفرازات تنتج هذا المزيج المميز.
وتتعدد مواطن هذه الأشجار، التي تنتج البخور ودهن العود، في دول مثل كمبوديا، فيتنام، لاوس، سنغافورة، إندونيسيا، ماليزيا، تايلاند، لكنها تواجه خطر الانقراض بسبب ندرتها، وغلاء ما تنتجه، ووعورة المسالك والطرق في البيئات التي تعيش فيها.
وقد أصبحت هذه المواد بفضل ندرتها من أغلى المواد، ويصل ارتفاع أسعارها في بعض الأوقات بنسبة 500%.
وبحسب جودة ونوعية العود، تبدأ أسعار كيلو البخور بمبالغ قد تبدأ بعشرة آلاف دولار، وقد تصل بسبب ندرتها وجودتها إلى مبالغ تصل إلى 100 ألف دولار للكيلو.
وعرفت منطقة الخليج باستهلاك هذه المادة العطرة، إن كان دهن العود، أو البخور.
وعلى سبيل المثال فإن المملكة العربية السعودية تعد من أكثر مناطق استهلاك هذه المادة، وتصرف السعودية ملايين الدولارات سنويا لتوفير العود، لتعطير وتطيب الحرمين الشريفين.
