Nova Scotia is expected to see significant rainfall and strong winds on Sunday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning that between 25 and 40 mm of rain could fall in the Halifax area, possibly more in heaviest showers.

As of 6 a.m., the national weather agency says a low pressure system is forecast to track over eastern Nova Scotia, bringing along with it a period of significant rainfall and the possibility of thunderstorms to central and western parts of the province.

“Wet snow may mix in at times over higher elevations,” adds Environment Canada.

In addition to the rain, wind will be a factor as easterly gusts as high as 8 km per hour are anticipated later in the day.

According to the agency, the system will last until early Monday morning.

It advises people to clear storm drains and gutters of debris ahead of the heaviest rain, which is expected to begin Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada forecasts a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, with clearing near noon and a high of 13, cooler along the coast.
