Smith’s lawyer, Stan MacDonald, appeared on his client’s behalf Thursday in a Dartmouth, N.S., courtroom, where he told the judge that Smith had instructed him to plead not guilty to the charge. The actor’s trial in provincial court in Dartmouth is scheduled for three days in early October. Smith was charged on Oct. 2, 2025. But court documents do not provide details of the allegations, which have yet to be tested in court. The documents, however, show that Smith has been ordered not to communicate with or visit the home, work, or school of the female complainant, whose identity is protected from publication by a court-ordered ban. Crown attorney Bryson McDonald said it was unclear how many witnesses would testify during the trial. “The only one we know with certainty would be the complainant,” he said outside the courtroom. Crown and defence lawyers are expected to gather for a pretrial conference in May. Smith, 53, was born near New Glasgow, N.S., and is also a writer and producer on the show, mainly filmed in the Halifax area and near Truro, N.S., north of the port city. Last year, Trailer Park Boys Inc., a Nova Scotia-based company with Smith registered as one of three directors at the time, said the firm was aware of the allegations and takes them seriously. The other two directors are John Paul Tremblay, who plays Julian on the show, and Robert Wells, who plays Ricky. The company also confirmed Smith had stepped away from his role at Trailer Park Boys Inc. In August, the company announced it had completed filming a 13th season, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the series. The mockumentary is set in fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park, where Bubbles, Julian and Ricky routinely get involved in get-rich-quick schemes that go awry. The original show, created by Mike Clattenburg, ran for seven seasons before spawning four feature-length films, two spinoff series and a Christmas special. Trailer Park Boys Inc. announced in July that it was launching its own streaming service to host its content. Smith has won a Canadian Comedy Award and two Gemini Awards for his work on the show. He was also the guitarist for rock band Sandbox in the mid-1990s, when they were nominated for Best New Group at the Juno Awards in 1996.
