Gov. Gen. Mary Simon has announced Sidney Crosby and Colleen Jones are among 99 people being appointed to the Order of Canada. NHL star and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Crosby has been named an officer, which recognizes “achievement and merit of a high degree, especially service to Canada or to humanity at large.” According to a news release, it’s for “being one of the greatest hockey players of all time and for supporting community service initiatives for youth.” And curler Colleen Jones has been named a member, which recognizes “distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity.” Gov. Gen. Simon says it’s for “her accomplishments and contributions both on and off the ice, as a Canadian curling legend, reporter and broadcaster.” Two more Nova Scotians also made the list. Businessman John Bragg has been promoted to a companion to the order, the honour roll’s highest status “for his exceptional contributions to the prosperity and well-being of Atlantic Canadians and for his legendary commitment to the development of rural communities.” Architect and former Dalhousie University professor Brian MacKay-Lyons has been named a member “for his contributions to architecture, notably through his vernacular designs that celebrate Nova Scotia culture.” Simon said in a statement that the appointees’ commitment to the betterment of Canada fills her with pride and hope for the future. “Celebrated trailblazers in their respective fields, they are inspiring, educating and mentoring future generations, creating a foundation of excellence in our country that is respected throughout the world,” her statement said.
