Remnants of Hurricane Ida bring large rainfall, strong winds to parts of Atlantic Canada

Atlantic Canada experienced the remnants of Hurricane Ida on Thursday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of our region.

Stanhope, Prince Edward Island recorded a whopping 142.5 millimetres of rain while Brier Island in Nova Scotia recorded 125 millimetres. Grand Manan, New Brunswick recorded the highest total in that province with 102 millimetres.

Nova Scotia’s Department of Public Works said several roads in the Digby Neck and Long Island area experienced washouts and flooding, urging drivers to use extreme caution.

Strong winds also accompanied the system with gusts of 80 to 120 km/h in parts of Cape Breton. Gusts between 70km/h and 100 km/h were recorded in parts of southern New Brunswick and western Prince Edward Island.

Here in Halifax, rainfall amounts were variable with 23 millimetres recorded at Stanfield Airport but lower amounts along parts of the coast. Wind gusts over 80 km/h were also recorded.
