RCMP release dog breeds involved in fatal child attack

Police say a youth who died following a dog attack in Shelburne County this past weekend was mauled by two Cane Corsos and one Rottweiler.

According to RCMP, on Jan. 3, emergency crews responded to a report of a dog attack that took place on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown where the three dogs attacked the boy who was riding a bicycle by the property.

He was transported to Halifax via LifeFlight helicopter but later succumbed to his injuries.

The dogs involved have since been euthanized by a veterinarian.

“This is an extremely distressing and tragic incident for everyone involved,” says S/Sgt. Mark Macpherson, Detachment Commander, Shelburne District RCMP.

Police said they are now investigating the incident and have been gathering and analyzing video footage as well as interviewing a number of people about the dogs’ day-to-day movements.

“Our team is working through several investigative steps to fully understand what happened and to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack,” says S/Sgt. Macpherson. “Community members have been very supportive of our work, and the dog owners have been cooperative throughout.”

Police are asking anyone with with information who has not yet spoken to police to contact the RCMP.

On Tuesday, The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education confirmed the death of the Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School.

Meantime, a statement from The Municipality of the District of Shelburne read that the community “is deeply heartbroken by the tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy following a fatal dog attack.”
