Rainfall warning issued ahead of system set to impact Halifax area

A rainfall warning has been issued for the Halifax area and much of the South Shore with a storm system set to impact the area starting Thursday night.

The yellow-level warning is calling for 30 to 50 mm of rain and potentially higher for areas that see thunderstorms.

“Rain will intensify over southwestern Nova Scotia late this evening, reaching the Halifax Metro region just after midnight,” read the advisory from Environment Canada. “A few thundershowers may develop tonight, possibly leading to rainfall rates of 5 to 10 mm per hour over some areas.”

CityNews meteorologist Allister Aadlers says the rain is forecast to continue into Friday.

“This is a slow moving system, the downpours that come with it could be slower moving, which means we could see localized areas of higher rainfall but also some localized pooling or flooding, especially in lower-lying areas,” Aalders said.

Conditions are expected to dry out by Saturday, with more rain in the forecast for Sunday.
