Nova Scotia takes next step toward specialized menopause clinic

Nova Scotia is a step closer to opening a clinic focused on managing symptoms related to perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.

A request for proposals for a clinic space for the so-called Menopause Centre of Excellence has now been issued, the provincial government announced on Wednesday.

The clinic is expected to open in the winter of 2026-27.

“Our government understands the need to provide better healthcare to the nearly 350,000 women in Nova Scotia over the age of 40 who are managing menopause, post-menopause or approaching menopause,” said Premier Tim Houston. “This clinic will work to close a gap in healthcare that has existed for too long, providing women the specialized, dedicated care they deserve.”

According to the province, the clinic will be staffed by general practitioners, registered nurses, pelvic floor physiotherapists, dietitians and gynecologists, with care delivered in-person and virtually across Nova Scotia.

The leader of the official opposition said that while recognition of people experiencing menopause is important, the government needs to move faster on healthcare.

“If this government actually takes the issue of health care seriously, they need to take the issue of health care for everyone seriously,” said NDP leader Claudia Chender. “We have women across this province whose symptoms are ignored, whose medical practitioners do not have the training they need to help them.”
