Man invading Herring Cove Road home fatally shot, police say

Halifax Regional Police believe a man who died in Spryfield last week was invading a home.

Officers were called to a Herring Cove Road residence at around 8:20 p.m. last Wednesday, January 4, where they found the body of a man with a gunshot wound.

At the time, they said they were investigating a suspicious death.

Investigators now believe at least three people were committing a home invasion at the time, and at least one of them had a firearm.

“An altercation occurred with the occupants of the home resulting in the death of one of the individuals invading the home,” HRP said in a news release.

“The other home invasion suspects, who were dressed in dark clothing, fled the area in a vehicle.”

Police do not believe it was a random incident.

The shooting death of the 33-year-old man has been ruled a homicide.

“Out of respect for his family’s wishes we are not releasing the deceased’s name at this time,” police stated.

Four people were arrested at the scene.

Three were later released without charges and HRP say criminal charges are not being considered at this time in relation to the death.

The fourth person arrested, a 21-year-old man, will appear in court at a later date to face charges of carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Police are still looking for the other suspects in the home invasion.

This is the second time in recent weeks someone alleged to be invading a home has died.

On the evening of Friday, Dec. 30, police were called to Robie Street north of Young where they found a man who had been stabbed.

Investigators believe two men were committing a home invasion when they were confronted by a resident. They don’t believe it was a random incident.

Criminal charges are also not being considered in relation to that death.
