Savage currently serves as the Mayor of Halifax where he has represented the electorate for 12 years. Prior to his position as mayor, Savage was the Member of Parliament for Dartmouth – Cole Harbour for seven years. “I congratulate Mike Savage on his appointment as the new Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia,” Trudeau wrote in a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office. “He is a passionate public servant and an experienced leader, and I am confident that he will continue to serve Nova Scotians well and make important contributions in his new role.” Savage has been a staunch advocate for local economic growth, sustainability, accessibility and inclusion. He has been an active member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Big City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC), including as Co-Chair of FCM’s Syrian Refugee Response Task Force in 2015. He is also the President of the World Energy Cities partnership, an international organization of cities with significant energy sector interests. As an MP he served on various parliamentary committees including the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, of which he served as Vice-Chair. Prior to entering politics, Savage spent 20 years in the business industry in Halifax. He has been involved in numerous community organizations focused on health, the arts, education, and humanitarian work, including as a former board member for the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and President of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Savage has received congratulations on X from fellow council members including Councillor Tony Mancini. Savage will serve a minimum term of five years.
