Halifax and Parks Canada have agreed to look at the feasibility of designating a local wilderness area as a national urban park.

The municipality says it has signed a statement of collaboration with Parks Canada through the National Urban Park Program. It says Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lakes is one a just a few sites nationwide chosen for the potential designation.

HRM says it will review current council-approved parkland priorities to determine what areas would be prime candidates within the potential urban park boundary.

The federal government announced the new program earlier this week. It aims to create a cross-country network of national urban parks.
