A 13-year-old boy who was attacked by a trio of dogs this past weekend in Shelburne County has died from his injuries.

The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education confirmed the death in a statement to CityNews Halifax.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School,” said Jared Purdy, TCRCE Regional Executive Director.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, and all those affected. A loss such as this is felt widely, and we recognize the impact it has across our schools and broader communities.”

Purdy said supports are in place at the school and neighbouring schools, which include psychologists and counsellors.

In a statement from The Municipality of the District of Shelburne, it reads that the community “is deeply heartbroken by the tragic loss of a 13-year-old boy following a fatal dog attack.”

“We ask residents to keep the boy’s family, friends, and classmates in their hearts and thoughts.”

On Jan. 3, emergency crews responded to a report of a dog attack that took place on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, according to a press release from the RCMP.

Mounties said three large-breed dogs attacked the boy who was riding a bicycle by the property.

He was transported to Halifax via LifeFlight helicopter but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to RCMP, the dogs involved have been euthanized by a veterinarian.

CityNews reached out to RCMP but Mounties say they don’t have any additional information at this time.
