CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie meets with Halifax mayor

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie met with Halifax Mayor Mike Savage this week as the league continues a long-standing quest to add a team in Atlantic Canada, Sportsnet’s Arash Madani reported Tuesday.

Per sources: Halifax mayor Mike Savage met this week with CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie. I’m told Savage is in Toronto on another matter, but the two had lunch.

The meeting comes less than two weeks after a sellout crowd of 11,555 attended a regular-season game between the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders at Huskies Stadium on the campus of Halifax’s Saint Mary’s University.

No potential ownership group has been publicly identified and current stadiums in Halifax would likely have to be expanded to allow a potential 10th team to play in the Nova Scotia capital.

The CFL has been eyeing Atlantic Canada for decades, though it hasn’t been able to make the dream a reality for a full-time team.

The league has had a series of games, called Touchdown Atlantic in the region.

Wolfville, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. also have hosted Touchdown Atlantic games.

A 10th team would make scheduling far easier for the CFL, which has to have at least one team off every week because it has an odd number of teams.
