Halifax Regional Police say another dog was left in a parked car during the recent heat warning.

An officer was dispatched to Bedford parking lot at around 4:15 p.m. Sunday where they found a dog alone in a vehicle with all the windows rolled up.

The dog was removed, and when the owner returned, he was handed a $697.50 ticket under the Animal Protection Act for causing an animal distress.

Halifax was under a heat warning at the time, with Sunday being the fourth day in a row the temperature reached or topped 28 degrees.

Two other men were fined on Friday for the same offence, one in Dartmouth and another in Halifax.

“On a warm day, even with the windows open, a parked vehicle quickly becomes like a furnace and presents potentially fatal conditions for pets left inside,” said HRP in a news release.

“When the temperatures start to climb, we encourage pet owners to not leave their pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes.”

Police say if you can’t leave your pet at home, consider using a drive-thru or curbside pickup.

“Your pet can sit comfortably with you in your car while you wait for your meal or service,” said HRP.

They also recommend making sure you pack plenty of water for your pup and bring along a dish for them to drink from.

If you spot an animal in distress, call police at 902-490-5020 and take directions from the call taker.
