A Quebec studio won game of the year. So why doesn’t the game look Canadian?

A Quebec-made video game set in a fictionalized version of the American Deep South, called South of Midnight, won the top prize at last week’s Canadian Game Awards — a fitting example of a larger tension in Canada’s game industry.

Canada is one of the giants of the global games industry, employing thousands in studios large and small and contributing $5.5 billion to the country’s GDP, according to the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (new window). But for all the games made here, few are recognizably set here….
