A wind warning is now in effect for the Halifax area as we wait for a late fall storm to arrive.

Environment Canada expects strong winds to kick in late Wednesday.

Maximum southerly gusts could reach 90 km/h, and possibly higher along exposed areas of the Atlantic coast.

Meteorologists say that means loose objects, including outdoor Christmas decorations, could cause damage.

“High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches,” the wind warning said. “Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds.”

As of 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, rainfall warnings are in effect along the South Shore, but have not yet extended into the Halifax area. However, we can expect to get an intense rainfall in a fairly short period of time, which means the possibility of water pooling on roads.

Winds are expected to switch to a westerly direction and start subsiding Thursday afternoon.
