CITYnews halifax: Six public transit operators in N.S. get provincial funding boost

The Nova Scotia government will be investing $925,000 to support transit services for six municipalities and community organizations.

On Monday, the provincial government announced that the investment would make it easier for residents to get to work and school and meet other transportation needs.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality will receive the largest share at $425,000, while Tidal Transit is getting $375,000 to stabilize its fleet operations in the western Annapolis Valley.

Funding will also be handed to transit operations in Antigonish, Pictou County, Bridgewater and the Strait Area Transit Co-operative in Port Hawkesbury.

Some of the operators are expected to use the money to purchase vehicles and shelters, or to pay for maintenance and repairs.

The $925,000 is coming from the Public Transit Assistance Program, which is one of three provincial programs that provide grants to support community transportation and transit services in rural communities, according to the province.

“Having transit services available means residents have affordable options as they travel for their daily needs,” said Public Works Minister Fred Tilley in a release. “Whether it’s a trip to the pharmacy, the grocery store or to visit friends, transportation means independence and access.”
