The Department of Labour says a stop work order has been issued for the crane at the centre of an incident Thursday that saw dozens of people evacuated in the Fairview neighbourhood.

Emergency crews were called to a construction site on Dutch Village Road on Thursday afternoon to reports of a crane at risk of collapse. According to the department, the crane operator identified “unusual activity” and took immediate action.

“[Labour department] officers were at the scene throughout the night, monitoring safety,” read a statement from the department. “Under the direct supervision of an engineer, repairs were carried out overnight to stabilize the crane.”

Roadways in the area were reopened and evacuations lifted early Friday morning.

According to its statement, the department is continuing its investigation to determine if there will be any additional compliance actions.
