High winds, heavy rain ring in spring break

CITYnews halifax/ By Rachel Morgan

It will be a rainy start to spring break so if you are planning activities for the kids, make sure they are indoors.

The majority of Nova Scotia, including Halifax Metro, is under a special weather statement for a storm expected to begin Monday that will bring high winds and heavy rain.

According to Environment Canada, 30 to 50 mm of rain is expected throughout the day Monday. Rain is expected to start in the west and move eastward as the day progresses. Rain is expected to stop Tuesday night.

If rain wasn’t enough to put a damper on your plans, high winds are also forecasted. Gusts could reach up to 70 to 90 km/h in exposed areas.

Localized flooding can be expected.

“Very mild temperatures will result in rapid melting of the remaining snowpack,” Environment Canada says. “In addition, partially frozen ground will have limited ability to absorb the excess water from the rainfall and the snowmelt.”

Temperatures in Halifax are expected to reach 7 C Monday before climbing to 13 C on Tuesday.
