Man arrested after barricading himself in home

Halifax RCMP have laid several charges against a man after he barricaded himself into a home following an attempted break and enter.

It happened on July 4 shortly after 3:30 p.m. when RCMP responded to a report of an attempted break and enter at a residence on Cow Bay Road.

When officers arrived on scene, the male suspect had fled to a home on Orion Drive and refused to exit. Police asked immediate neighbours to shelter in place and an RCMP negotiator was brought in to assist.

RCMP say the man then lit a fire inside the residence prompting a call to fire services.

After the RCMP Emergency Response Team arrived, police say the man exited the home. He then, however, refused officers’ instructions. The suspect allegedly resisted arrest by assaulting the officers. A taser was then deployed and the man was safely taken into custody.

The suspect sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital by EHS for assessment.

The man has now been charged with the following offences:

• five counts of Assaulting a Peace Officer;
• two counts of Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose;
• two counts of Resisting Arrest;
• two counts of Mischief; and
• Failure to Comply with Undertaking.

The investigation is ongoing and the suspect is to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on July 7.
