AFP عدنان خاشقجي وزوجته لمياء جمع خاشقجي ثروة كبيرة، وأصبح من أغنى الشخصيات في العالم خلال سبعينيات وثمانينيات القرن العشرين، نتيجة العمولات الهائلة التي تلقاها عن صفقات السلاح الكبيرة بين الدول الخليجية والشركات الأمريكية والبريطانية وغيرها. وجاء في بيان لعائلته لدى وفاته: “إن عدنان خاشقجي جمع بين الريادة في مجال الأعمال التجارية والكرم الذي يُشهد له به” وكان دائم الاخلاص لبلده السعودية وخدم مصالحها دائما، حسب البيان. ومن أشهر صفقات السلاح التي توسط فيها خاشقجي كانت “اليمامة”، وهي عبارة مبادلة السلاح بالنفط، وكانت قيمتها 20 مليار دولار بين الحكومة السعودية وبريطانيا بعد منافسة شديدة مع فرنسا. وأشارت التقديرات في ثمانينيات القرن الماضي إلى أن ثروته كانت تبلغ حوالي 40 مليار دولار. “أنهار الشمبانيا” وكان خاشقجي معروفا بولعه بالقمار، وإقامة الحفلات الصاخبة الكبيرة، ودعوة المشاهير من الرجال والنساء لهذه الحفلات التي كانت أنهار الشمبانيا تسيل خلالها، حسب وصف صحيفة نيويورك تايمز الامريكية. وبمناسبة بلوغه الخمسين من العمر، أقام حفلا في مزرعته الواقعة على الشاطىء في مارابيا باسبانيا، والممتدة على مساحة خمسة آلاف فدان. وحضر الحفل 400 شخصا، ووصفه أحد الحضور بأنه “الأكثر بذخا” بعد الاحتفال الذي أقامه ملك فرنسا لويس الرابع عشر بمناسبة توليه العرش. لم تخل حياة خاشقجي من المشاكل، إذ واجه عدة دعاوى قانونية وفضائح، من بينها فضيحة إيران-كونترا واتهامه من قِبل القضاء الأمريكي بغسيل الأموال لصالح زوجة ديكتاتور الفليبين السابق، ايميلدا ماركوس.
