ويعتقد أن ترينر أصيبت بالعدوى عندما لعقها أحد الكلبين الأليفين لديها في ذراعها في مايو الماضي، مما أدى إلى شكل من أمراض المناعة لديها، حيث بدأت تشعر بالمرض لأول مرة معتقدة أنها قد تكون مصابة بالأنفلونزا.
ولكن حالتها ساءت أكثر فتم نقلها إلى المستشفى في ولاية أوهايو الأميركية، بعد أن ارتفعت درجة حرارتها بشكل مثير للقلق، بحسب ما ذكرت صحيفة الاندبندنت البريطانية.
وفي المستشفى اشتكت السيدة الأميركية من ألم مبرح في يديها وساقيها، وأصبحت غير قادرة على التنفس من تلقاء نفسها، فاضطر الأطباء إلى إدخالها في حالة غيبوبة ووضعت على أجهزة دعم الحياة.
وفي غضون ساعات، بدأت تعاني من الغرغرينا والنخر في ساقيها ويديها، وأخذت حالتها تزادا سوءا وبسرعة كبيرة بحسب ما ذكرت ابنة شقيتها جينا بريمير التي تعمل ممرضة في المستشفى.
وأظهرت اختبارات الدم لاحقا أن ترينر أصيبت بالعدوى الناجمة عن بكتيريا “كابنوسيتوفاغا كانيمورسوس” أو ما يعرف بالعربية ببكتيريا “سخامية عضة الكلب”، هي نوع من البكتيريا العصوية الموجودة بشكل طبيعي في لثة الكلاب والقطط.
ومن المعتقد أن مثل رد الفعل الحاد هذا يحدث لنحو واحد من كل مليون شخص يتلامس مع لعاب الكلب.
وقالت المدير الطبي للأمراض المعدية في مستشفى أولمان الدكتورة مارغريت كوبي، للقناة الثامنة التابعة لشبكة فوكس “إنه أمر شائع إلى حد ما في لعاب الكلب ويمكن أن ينتقل عن طريق العضة أو في بعض الأحيان الاتصال باللعاب”.
