بانورامية هائلة ومرة وثاقبة لمجتمع كان يعيش في تلك اللحظات مرحلة تحولاته الاجتماعية والأخلاقية الكبرى، فإذا أضفنا إلى هذا أن ملاك الأراضي الذين كان تشيتشيخوف يلتقيهم ليشتري ما لديهم من جثث، يعانون في تلك الفترة بالذات انتشار الأوبئة والمجاعة التي قضت على أملاكهم ودمرت أوضاعهم الاقتصادية، يطالعنا كم أن هذا الدمار انعكس على أخلاق المجتمع. الشر من طبيعة البشر من هنا لا يعود وجود “الشيطان”/ تشيتشيخوف سبباً في تحريك الأطماع، بل يصبح هذا الوجود مجرد الكاشف الذي ينم عما يعتمل في أعماق طبقة بأسرها خلال مرحلة هبوطها إلى القعر، وبالتالي فإن جولات تشيتشيخوف ولقاءاته تتيح لغوغول أن يتوقف مطولاً عند كثير
