صدمة كبيرة لدى النخبة الكورية الشمالية، وربما يشكل أزمة سياسية لاختيار زعيم يخلف كيم. تاريخ من فترات بلا زعيم شهد تاريخ كوريا الشمالية فترات لم يكن لدى البلاد أي رئيس أو خليفة للرئيس، وكانت الأولى قبل أن يتم تعيين كيم جونغ سونغ، جد كيم جونغ أون، رئيسا في أوائل السبعينيات، والثانية عندما توفي والده كيم جونغ إيل في عام 1994، حينها ظل منصب الرئيس شاغرا دون تولي أي شخصية لهذا المنصب، والفترة الثالثة تزور الجارة الجنوبية في تاريخ الكوريتين. ووجه كيم يو جونغ، ليس جديدا على الساحة السياسية في كوريا الشمالية، فقد بدأت المشوار مع والدها كيم جونغ إيل عندما خدمت في الحكومة، قبل تعيينها في عام 2014 نائب
