رواية ستيفنسون تغوص في بعد فلسفي على شاشة عميقة مرعبة

كان الكاتب الأرجنتيني بورخيس يقول عن سلفه روبرت لويس ستيفنسون إن ميزته الرئيسية في كتاباته تكمن في كونه “مبدع شخصيات من طراز نادر”، بل أنه “يحدث لشخصياته المبتدَعة أن تكون هي بدورها خالقة شخصيات”. وهكذا، يضيف بورخيس تتكاثر لعبة المرايا لدى ستيفنسون بحيث يتحول فنه الروائي إلى شعر خالص. وفي هذا السياق قد يكون عمل ستيفنسون الأكبر هو روايته “دكتور جايكل ومستر هايد”. هذه الرواية التي عوملت دائماً بوصفها رواية رعب، لكن بورخيس اعتبرها رواية فلسفية ونصاً شاعرياً. ومن هنا، مقابل عشرات الأفلام والمسرحيات والمسلسلات التلفزيونية التي اقتبست عن هذه الرواية، ويمكن الزعم أنها الاقتباسات الأكثر عدداً التي حظي بها أي عمل أدبي على الإطلاق، كان من شأن أعمال نادرة أن ترضي بورخيس بوصفها تساير النوايا الأصلية لستيفنسون في التعامل مع الرواية كعمل فلسفي شاعري. ومن المؤكد أن في مقدمة هذه الأعمال الفيلم الذي حققته هوليوود عام 1932 من إخراج روبن ماموليان وتمثيل فردريك مارش الذي فاز عن دوريه التوأمين في الفيلم بجائزة أوسكار مستحقة. لكن الأهم من هذا أن الفيلم كان من إخراج ذاك الذي سيعتبر دائماً أحد كبار الشعراء في عالم الفن السابع الهوليوودي. والحقيقة أن ذلك التوصيف لم يكن اعتباطياً حتى وإن كان كثر من مؤرخي السينما ونقادها ينسون هذه الحقيقة متعاملين مع ماموليان بكونه هوليوودياً خالصاً.
السينما وطن وهوية
مهما يكن فإن ماموليان نفسه كان يحلو له، قبل رحيله عام 1987، أن يجيب من يغامر بأن يسأله: في نهاية الأمر، ما هي هويتك الحقيقية؟ بأن هويته الحقيقية هي السينما “هي الجنسية والوطن”، مضيفاً: “وهي المجاز الذي يمكنه أن يصوّر علاقتنا بأميركا خير تصوير”. والحال أن ماموليان، الأميركي من أصل روسي، والروسي من أصل أرمني، والأرمني من أصل شركسي – تركي، كان يجسد فعلياً تلك البداوة التي لم يكف الفن في القرن العشرين عن عيشها. ونعرف أن البداوة كانت وأميركا في القرن العشرين قرينين. أو هذا ما كان يراه ماموليان على أية حال. والحقيقة أننا لو تفحصنا الفن السينمائي الأميركي على طول تاريخه، الذي هو تاريخ قرننا العشرين هذا، سيتبين لنا حقاً أنه فن البداوة والاختلاط بامتياز. فالسينما الأميركية صنعها أناس وصنعتها تقنيات وصنعتها مواضيع أتوا وأتت من شتى أنحاء العالم، لتختلط في تلك الدنيا الغريبة عبر تمازج كوزموبوليتي لا شبيه لها في تاريخ البشرية. من هنا اعتبار ماموليان أن السينما هويته ووطنه.
ولد ماموليان في تبليس الجورجية عام 1897، وتدرب في “مسرح الفن” الشهير في موسكو، قبل أن ينتقل إلى لندن حيث عمل في مسارحها، ثم انتقل إلى نيويورك حيث عمل في مسارح برودواي قبل أن ينتقل إلى هوليوود ليصبح من أساطين سينماها، وهناك وطوال عقود من العمل المجتهد والدؤوب تنوعت مواضيع ماموليان لكن أسلوبه ظل على الدوام متسماً بطابع شاعري وبخلفيات فلسفية كانت هي ما جعل اقتباسه لـ”دكتور جايكل ومستر هايد” يعتبر دائماً من الأفضل بين نحو مئة اقتباس للرواية حُققت في عشرات البلدان ومنذ بدايات السينما الصامتة.

ذات ليلة لندنية
من ناحية مبدئية لم يحد ماموليان عن “أحداث” رواية ستيفنسون التي تنطلق من مشهد ليلي مدهش يدور مع ذلك الرجل الغريب والقميء الذي يطالعنا أول ما يطالعنا وهو يسير بخيلاء في زقاق جانبي خال من المارة. وهو، خلال سيره، يرسم بعصاه في الهواء أشكالاً غريبة تبدو مرعبة لمن يراها. في الوقت نفسه ثمة فتاة صبية تركض في زقاق آخر يتقاطع مع الزقاق الأول، من دون أن تتنبه إلى العابر الآخر. تركض وهي على عجلة من أمرها مرتعبة. وإذ تصل إلى زاوية الزقاقين، يحدث ما كان لا بد له من أن يحدث: تصطدم الفتاة بالأحدب القميء ويقع الاثنان أرضاً. فور الوقوع ينهض الرجل ويسير فوق جسم الفتاة من دون أن يعبأ بها، فيما هي تصرخ رعباً وألماً. هنا يهرع بعض المارة الذين كانوا شهوداً على ما حدث ويقبضون على الرجل، خائفين مندهشين من قبحه. وهو على الفور يعلمهم أنه يدعى السيد هايد، ويقول لهم إنه لا يحب المشكلات، لذلك يقترح أن يدفع للفتاة مبلغاً من المال على سبيل التعويض عن الأذى الذي تسبب به. ثم، أمام الجمع الذي فوجئ بذلك، يملأ شيكاً يحمل توقيع واحد من أهل المدينة المرموقين: الدكتور جايكل.
علاقة ما…
ترى، ما هي العلاقة بين ذلك “الوحش” وبين الدكتور المعروف بعلمه وأخلاقه القويمة وطيبته؟ ولماذا عمد الدكتور، كما سيفيدنا التحقيق لاحقاً، إلى كتابة وصيته، ووضع أمواله، في تصرف ذلك الشخص الذي يثير الرعب والاشمئزاز لدى كل من يدنو منه أو يراه؟ تنتشر هذه الأسئلة في المدينة، ويبادر الكاتب العدل آترسون الذي تنامى إليه خبر ذلك كله، إلى الاهتمام بالأمر، لأنه – قبل أي شيء – صديق حميم للدكتور جايكل، ولأنه – انطلاقاً من وضعه القانوني – يدرك أن ليس ثمة أي تزوير في الأمر، فالتوقيع توقيع جايكل، وثمة أوراق قانونية تثبت قدرة الوحش، فعلاً، على التصرف بأموال الدكتور. فهل ثمة، في الأمر، إذاً، نوع من الابتزاز؟ وهكذا ينصرف آترسون إلى التحقيق في الأمر وتكون الحقيقة التي اكتشفها آترسون، بمعاونة صديقه واينفيلد، قالت إن الدكتور الطيب والعالم الجليل جايكل أذهله اكتشافه الفلسفي ذات يوم لواقع أنه في داخل كل فرد منا يتعايش كائنان، واحدهما طيب والآخر شرير. فما كان منه إلا أن انصرف إلى محاولة الفصل، جسدياً، بين الكائنين. وهو يعثر على وسيلة لذلك: امتصاص مادة كيماوية، يمكن بفضلها المرء أن يكون، وفق ما يشاء، مرة طيباً ومرة شريراً.
جولات الشرير
وهكذا، إذ يطبّق التجربة العلمية على نفسه، نراه يتحول إلى المستر هايد، ثم يعود بفضل المادة الكيماوية، دكتور جايكل من جديد. ولأن الدكتور شديد الحذر، يخشى أن يعجز مرة عن أن يعود طيباً لسبب ما، يكتب وصيته لمصلحة مخلوقه الشرير السيد هايد. ويروح هذا، في ليالي لندن العتمة وشوارعها البائسة يتجول ممارساً شروره. وكانت هذه الحقيقة إذ اكتشفها آترسون دافعاً لتحركه. وهكذا، إذ يطرق واينفيلد على باب الدكتور جايكل ذات ليلة، لا يجيبه أحد. فالواقع أن هايد عجز في الداخل عن أن يعود جايكل من جديد. وهكذا يدور صراع داخل هذا المخلوق يقرر على إثره أن يحبس نفسه في الداخل غير عالم بما عليه أن يفعل. وحين يدخل واينفيلد وتنكشف حقيقة الدكتور، يفضل هذا الأخير أن يقتل نفسه على أن يعيش شريراً بقية حياته.
الأحداث نفسها… ولكن…
تلك هي الأحداث التي اقتبسها ماموليان كغيره من رواية ستيفنسون، لكن ماموليان كان أكثر أمانة في عمله لروح الرواية كما سيلتقطه بورخيس حيث نراه يبتعد قدر الإمكان عن المؤثرات المرعبة وعن ظاهر الأحداث ليغوص في ذلك البعد الشاعري، لا سيما من خلال اشتغاله على الدورين “التوأمين” اللذين هما في النهاية دور واحد يجمع الدكتور المخترع بالمخلوق الذي اخترعه، كناية عن الوجود المزدوج للخير والشر داخل كل واحد منا. ولعل الرائع هنا هو أن الممثل فردريك مارش قدم الدورين روحاً وجسداً بتعبير يبقي كثيراً من إمكانات الشر في الوجه الطيب والكثير من إمكانات الخير في الوجه الشرير، ما جعل الرعب داخلياً. ومن هنا تميز الفيلم بكونه أتى أقرب إلى الميلودراما منه إلى الرعب. غير أن هذا الذي كان مأخذاً للنقاد حين عرض الفيلم، سرعان ما بات ميزة الفيلم الأساسية مع مرّ السنين.
