وبدأ التيار الكهربائي يعود بعيد الساعة 22,00 (02,00 ت غ) في حي تايمز سكوير، ما دفع المارة إلى التعبير عن فرحهم، حسبما ذكر صحافي من وكالة فرانس برس.
وحوالى الساعة 23,00 كانت خمسة من القطاعات الكهربائية الستة قد استعادت أضواءها، بينما أكدت شركة الكهرباء أنها تعمل لإعادة التيار في كل المناطق بحلول منتصف الليل.
وصرح رئيس بلدية المدينة بيل دي بلازيو لشبكة “ام اس ان بي سي” من ولاية أيوا حيث يقوم بحملة انتخابية، أن سبب العطل “هو على ما يبدو شيء ما عمل بشكل خاطىء في طريقة نقل الكهرباء من جزء في المدينة إلى آخر لتلبية الطلب”.

وبانتظار عودة التيار الكهربائي، طلبت إدارة النقل في نيويورك من المسافرين “تجنب محطات المترو الواقعة تحت الأرض”، أي كل الشبكة تقريبا. وفي المساء، أعلنت أن الحركة تعود تدريجيا إلى طبيعتها.
وفي الشوارع وبينما انقطعت الكهرباء بالكامل عن منطقتي مسارح برودواي وهيلز كيتشن غربا، توقفت إشارات المرور عن العمل وانطفأت اللواحات الإعلانية لساحة تايمز سكوير.
وكانت أضواء سيّارات الشرطة والإطفاء وحدها منبعثة.

بعد دقائق فقط على انقطاع الكرباء، عمل المارة على تنظيم حركة السير بأنفسهم بينما انتقلت فرقتان كانت تقدمان المسرحيتين الغنائيتين “هدستاون” و”كام فرام أواي” وجوقة كانت تقدم عرضا في صالة كارنيغي هول العريقة، إلى الشارع لمواصلة عروضها.
وألغي الجزء الأكبر من عروض برودواي وخصوصا المسرحيتان الغنائيتان “هاملتون” و”ذي لايون كينغ”.
وفي مسرح “ماديسون سكوير غاردن” ألغت المغنية جنيفر لوبيز أيضا حفلا غنائيا بعد دقائق على بدئه. وقد نشرت فيديو على تويتر لتعتذر وتعلن تأجيل العرض.
في مكان غير بعيد، جلس عشرات من نزلاء فندق “راو نيويورك” الذي يقع في الجادة الثامنة، على الرصيف أمام المبنى بانتظار عودة الكهرباء.

وأكد إدارة الإطفاء السبت أنها لبت عشرات من طلبات المساعدة خصوصا لأشخاص عالقين في مصاعد.
وقالت مونيك أوتيرو التي كانت بين نزلاء الفندق “كنا في الداخل (في غرفهم) عندما أطفئت الأنوار ونزلنا على السلالم”. وأوضحت أنه تم تشغيل مولد للكهرباء ما سمح بفتح أبواب المصاعد التي علق فيها نزلاء.
واختار بعضهم استخدام هذه المصاعد للنزول لكنهم علقوا مجددا عندما توقف المولد المخصص لحالات الطوارىء عن العمل.
وحدث هذا الانقطاع في التيار الكهربائي في ذكرى انقطاع الكهرباء الواصع الذي شمل كل المدينة تقريبا في 1977.
ووفي أوج أزمة اقتصادية، شهدت نيويورك حينذاك عمليات نهب وتخريب طالت أكثر من ألف متجر.
وشهدت نيويورك عطلان آخران كبيران من هذا النوع في 1965 و2003.
