GETTY IMAGES أسلاك شائكة بمنطقة فاروشا السياحية في شمال قبرص وكان تحتمس الثالث فرعون مصر قد أعلنها جزءا من فتوحاته عام 1500 قبل الميلاد. وهناك مؤشرات على حدوث هجرات من اليونان إلى الجزيرة حوالي 1200 عام قبل الميلاد، وقد أسس اليونانيون العديد من الممالك المتحدثة باللغة اليونانية في الجزيرة. الأشوريون ومصر وتشير الوثائق التاريخية إلى أنه بحلول عام 709 قبل الميلاد كانت الممالك القبرصية تدفع الضرائب إلى الملك الآشوري سارغون الثاني واستمر ت التبعية للآشوريين حتى 663 قبل الميلاد، ومع انهيار إمبراطورية الآشوريين عام 700 قبل الميلاد، باتت مصر في ظل أسرة سيتي هي المهيمنة في شرق البحر المتوسط، وفي عام 569 اعترفت الممالك القبرصية بسيادة الفرعون أحمس الثاني عليها. وفي عام 525 قام الفرس بغزو مصر فحولت الممالك القبرصية ولاءها إلى الإمبراطورية الفارسية. وبعد انتصار الاسكندر المقدوني على الفرس عام 333 قبل الميلاد حولت الممالك القبرصية ولاءها إليه. وفي عام 323 في العصر البطلمي كانت قبرص تتبع مملكة البطالمة في مصر، والتي قمعت الممالك القبرصية وحولت الجزيرة إلى إقليم يتبع مصر مباشرة. وفي عام 58 قبل الميلاد ضمت الجمهورية الرومانية قبرص وقد منح يوليوس قيصر الجزيرة لفترة وجيزة لكيلوباترا السابعة ملكة مصر وأكد هذا الوضع مارك أنطوني، ولكن انتصار أوكتافيان أعاد تبعة الجزيرة لروما. وقد تمتعت الجزيرة ولمدة 600 عام بعد ذلك بالسلام. وبعد ظهور المسيحية اعتنقها أغلب سكان الجزيرة. تركيا تكثف عمليات الحفر قبالة قبرص مصر تحذر تركيا من عواقب التنقيب عن الغاز غرب قبرص وبعد انقسام الإمبراطورية الرومانية بين غربية وشرقية عام 395 صارت قبرص تابعة للدولة البيزنطية وهي الإمبراطورية الرومانية الشرقية. وفي عام 688 وقع الإمبراطور البيزنطي جوستنيان الثاني معاهدة مع الخليفة الأموي عبد الملك بن مروان يتم بمقتضاها تحييد الجزيرة التي كانت هدفا للغارات العربية، وظلت قبرص نحو 300 عام تحت نوع من الهيمنة المشتركة وذلك رغم تعرض المعاهدة لانتهاكات من الجانبين إلا أن هذه الترتيبات ظلت سارية حتى عام 965 عندما أحكم البيزنطيون سيطرتهم عليها. GETTY IMAGES تصاعد النزاع بين القبارصة الأتراك واليونانيين بعد الاستقلال وفي عام 1185 أعلن حاكم الجزيرة البيزنطي تمرده واستقل بها، ولكن في عام 1191 نجح الأسطول الصليبي بقيادة ملك انجلترا ريتشارد الأول في السيطرة عليها ومنذ ذلك الحين توالى على حكمها ملوك وفرسان صليبيون حتى عام 1426، عندما أغار عليها المماليك من مصر وسيطروا عليها ونصبوا عليها حاكما يتبعهم عام 1464 هو الملك جيمس الثاني وفرضوا عليها الجزية. العثمانيون والبريطانيون ثم كانت السيطرة العثمانية عام 1570 عندما سيطروا على نيقوسيا وبدأ حكمهم الذي استمر 3 قرون وفي هذه الفترة استقر آلاف المسلمين في الجزيرة. وفي عام 1878 وبمقتضى معاهدة بين بريطانيا والدولة العثمانية انتقلت الهيمنة الفعلية على الجزيرة إلى البريطانيين الذين كانوا يسعون إلى تأمين قاعدة شرقي البحر المتوسط. وفي عام 1914 ضمت بريطانيا الجزيرة واعترفت تركيا بذلك بمقتضى معاهدة لوزان عام 1923 وبعد ذلك بعامين أعلنت قبرص رسميا تابعة للتاج البريطاني.
