What’s open and what’s closed this Thanksgiving long weekend

Here’s a look at what will be open and closed on the Thanksgiving Day long weekend:

BUSINESSES

Thanksgiving Day is a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia, which means you can expect most stores and businesses to be shut down on Monday.

This includes grocery stores, NSLCs and malls.

You’ll be able to find some open pharmacies, but they may have reduced hours of operation Monday.

Expect banks to be closed Monday, some may also be closed on Sunday.

Several other businesses may be closed or have reduced operating hours on Monday, so it’s best to call ahead or check social media and/or websites for more information.

TRANSPORTATION

The Macdonald Bridge is scheduled to be closed from 7:30 a.m. Friday until 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Halifax Transit will be operating on a holiday schedule Monday.

The Alderney ferry will operate at half-hour frequency. The first ferry crossing will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. while the final crossing will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m.

There will be no Woodside ferry service on Monday.

On-street parking will be free on Monday.

RECREATION

All branches of Halifax Public Libraries will be closed Monday.

Most municipal recreation facilities will be closed Monday. Call your facility for specific details.

SERVICES

Canada Post will not be collecting or delivering mail on Monday.

There will be no municipal solid waste collection services Monday. If that’s your day, put your garbage, organics or recyclables curbside on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax Recycling Plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The residential Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Dr. will be closed on Saturday.

There is a mobile HSW event at Mic Mac Mall on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
