Halifax Regional Police closed the intersection of Barrington Street and Spring Garden Road on Wednesday afternoon as they investigated the discovery of a suspicious package.

Officers closed the intersection around 3:45 p.m., diverting traffic around the scene and causing traffic congestion during the start of the afternoon rush hour.

Police also asked people to say away from the immediate area while investigating.

About an hour later, police reported the all-clear saying their investigation determined that there was no threat to the public and that the package was, in fact, an abandoned suitcase.

Police reopened the intersection around 4:45 p.m., and traffic was allowed back into the area.
