The big draw at what’s nicknamed Stanfest this year is Jim Cuddy with the Blue Rodeo frontman taking the stage in Canso Friday night. However, artistic director Steve MacIntyre said its the lesser known acts that draws thousands of Nova Scotians to the event every year. He told CityNews Halifax that one of those is British Columbia’s Luke Wallace, what MacIntyre described as an “environmental activist” with a positive view. “The way he presents his message is second to none,” he said. “I think he’s got this real charisma and I think people are going to be drawn to him — I know I was.” MacIntyre said there are several other impactful artists on this year’s bill as well, adding that is the role of a folk fest like Stanfest. “It’s always been about having that voice, whether it be in that political direction or environmental direction or singing for social change,” he said.”(And) we’re happy to just give (musicians) that space.” Established in 1997 in honour of the late folk singer and songwriter Stan Rogers, the festival kicks off tonight with a tribute to the late Bruce Guthro, the iconic Nova Scotia singer-songwriter who died in September.
