Province puts aside money to ensure affordable housing in Yarmouth

The government of Nova Scotia has begun an affordable housing project in Yarmouth County that could benefit 50 people.

Minister of Growth and Development Colton LeBlanc made the announcement on Friday, saying design work was underway for up to 16 new public housing units in Tusket.

The site is close to Highway 103, schools, municipal offices, gas and convenience stores and other small businesses, and a short drive to Yarmouth.

LeBlanc says construction is expected to start next year.

“Everyone deserves a safe, comfortable place to live, and I am pleased to see these homes coming to our community,” says LeBlanc in a statement on the government’s website. “These new units will give residents one less thing to worry about, so they can focus on their work, their families or enjoying their retirement.”

The project is part of the provincial government’s $251 million plan to build 515 new public housing units for more than 1,300 Nova Scotians.

“This development will help ensure more residents can access housing in their own community, close to family services and opportunity,” says Nicole Albright, Warden for the Municipality of Argyle in a statement.

“By working together with the Province, we’re turning shared priorities into real housing solutions that will strengthen our community for years to come.”
