The Nova Scotia government has announced $18.6 million in additional funding to expand cellular service for areas of the province that are currently without service.

Wednesday’s announcement is in addition to $48 million funded last fall as part of the Cellular for Nova Scotia program.

“Nova Scotians need reliable cell service. It’s no longer a luxury; it’s a matter of safety and everyone deserves access,” Kim Masland, Minister of Public Works and Minister responsible for Build Nova Scotia, said. “This important investment will enhance coverage in rural and remote communities across our province.”

After reviewing proposals, the province selected Rogers to upgrade 27 existing sites and to bring them online to their 5G network

“As Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network provider, Rogers is always looking to expand to connect more Canadians when and where they want. We are proud to partner with the Government of Nova Scotia and Build Nova Scotia on the Cellular for Nova Scotia Program to close gaps in wireless coverage and improve public safety across the province for residents, visitors and businesses,” said   Phil Hartling, President, Rogers Wireless

The additional money will see the government add 27 new provincially-owned telecommunication towers in unserved areas, on top of the four announced in October 2023.

“Our government’s investment to build new towers across the province shows our commitment to improving cellular connectivity and communication for Nova Scotians, particularly in unserved rural areas. We are committed to improving our province’s trunk mobile radio network to help ensure our first responders and other users can communicate when they need it.” Said Colton Leblanc, Minister of Service Nova Scotia.

The first four towers will be in place next spring, with the remaining new and upgraded sites in place between next summer and the spring of 2027.

Rogers is the parent company of CityNews and 95.7 NewsRadio Halifax.
