Prince Andrew High School will have a new name this fall

When Prince Andrew High School students return to class this fall, it will be to a school with a new name.

Following summer break, it be called Woodlawn High School.

The school had already officially announced its plan to pick a new name for the upcoming school year following allegations of sexual assault against the member of the Royal family.

Members of the community were asked to submit suggestions, then a renaming committee came up with a Top 5 list that also included City of Lakes High School, Commodore Park High School, Ponamogoatitjg Academy and The Lakes High School.

End the end, staff and students chose to name the school after its geographic location.

In a statement posted today to its website, Principal Craig Campbell said the name “sets a tone for what happens inside a building.”

“It connects people and is part of our identity,” he stated. “A name should reflect our school community and uphold our values as a safe and inclusive learning space for all”

Grand 12 student Asiah Sparks added the change was not just wanted, but it was needed.

“A school name is like the title of a book; the title represents the story being told. When you have a title that doesn’t represent your story it can create assumptions.  Our school name didn’t reflect our student body, our values, or our facility. “

The new name becomes official on August 1.
