AFP عشرات الالاف من النساء في الهند يعملن في حصد قصب السكر وفي عدد كبير من الحالات قمن بذلك بغرض الحصول على فرصة عمل في مجال قطع قصب السكر. وكل عام، تهاجر الآلاف من الأسر الفقيرة من مناطق مثل ( بيد وعثمان آباد وسانجلي وسولابور) إلى المناطق الغربية الأكثر ثراءً في ولاية ماهاراشترا والمعروفة باسم “حزام السكر”، للعمل لمدة ستة أشهر في حقول قصب السكر. وبمجرد وصول هذه الأسر إلى تلك الحقول، تصبح تحت يومين خلال فترة الحيض، إلا أنه يتوجب عليهن دفع غرامة عن كل يوم عطلة. أما الظروف المعيشية في مكان العمل، فليست مثالية على الإطلاق، إذ يتعين على العائلات أن تعيش في أكواخ أو خيام بالقرب من الحقول، ولا توجد مراحيض أو حمامات، وبما أن الحصاد يستمر في بعض الأحيان حتى ساعات متأخرة في الليل، فلا يوجد وقت محدد للنوم أو الاستيقاظ. وعندما يحين موعد الدورة الشهرية، يصبح الأمر أكثر صعوبة للنساء العاملات، إذ تصاب العديد منهن بالتهابات نسائية وغيرها بسبب الظروف الصحية السيئة. ويقول النشطاء في المنطقة، إن الأطباء عديمي الشفقة يشجعون النساء على الخضوع لعمليات جراحية غير ضرورية، حتى لو كن يعانين من أمراض بسيطة وقابلة للعلاج بالأدوية. ونظراً لأن معظم النساء في هذه المناطق يتزوجن في سن مبكرة، فإن العديد منهن لديهن طفلين أو ثلاثة بحلول منتصف العشرينات من أعمارهن. ولأن الأطباء لا يخبرونهن بالمشاكل التي قد يواجهنها إذا ما خضعن لعملية استئصال الرحم، تظن الكثيرات منهن أنه لا ضير من التخلص من أرحامهن. وقد حول هذا الأمر العديد من القرى في المنطقة إلى “قرى نساء بلا أرحام”. وبعد أن أثيرت القضية الشهر الماضي في مجلس الولاية من قبل المشرّعة نيلام غورهي، اعترف وزير الصحة في ولاية ماهاراشترا، إكناث شيندا، بأنه “كانت هناك 4560 عملية استئصال للرحم في غضون ثلاث سنوات، ولكن ليس جميعهن لعاملات في حقول قصب السكر”.
