On Saturday, the White House confirmed that 25 percent tariffs would be placed on Canadian goods and a 10 percent tariff on energy beginning on February 4th. In response, Tim Houston said Saturday night that Nova Scotia would be taking three initial steps: Nova Scotia will limit access to the provincial procurement system for businesses based in the United States. The tolls at the Cobequid Pass will double for commercial vehicles from the US on February 3rd. The provincial government will direct NSLC to remove all alcohol from the United States on February 4th. “It’s remarkable to find ourselves at odds with our best friend and neighbour.” Houston said, “We are anxious to understand the federal government’s plans for programs to support Nova Scotians, and we will also do what we can, but it is too early to determine exactly what is necessary.” The Nova Scotia Liberal Party also posting a statement on Saturday in response to the tariffs “The U.S. tariffs announced today threaten jobs, industries, and livelihoods across Nova Scotia, hitting our rural resource sectors the hardest.
