Marked annually in Canada on April 28, the National Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy. It has been held every year since 1984 and is now observed in more than 100 countries. Among these deaths were 33 young workers aged 15-24. In 2023, 18 Nova Scotians died while at work, or because of work done in the past — that includes seven traumatic injuries and 11 deaths caused by chronic injuries. The Parliament of Canada passed the Workers Mourning Day Act in 1991, making April 28 an official Day of Mourning.
