MP Sean Fraser resigns from cabinet as provincial Liberals look for leader

Nova Scotia MP Sean Fraser is resigning from his position as federal housing minister.

He made the announcement on Monday, also saying he will not be seeking re-election. The Liberal MP has represented Central Nova since 2015.

“I advised the prime minister earlier this fall that I will not be seeking re-election as a member of parliament for Central Nova in the next campaign in order to spend more time with my family,” Fraser said at a news conference on Monday.

Fraser previously served as immigration minister following the Liberal’s 2021 election victory.

Fraser’s resignation comes just weeks after Nova Scotia’s Liberal party was reduced to just two seats in the legislature in a dramatic defeat that saw the Progressive Conservatives capture 42 seats, followed by the resignation of Liberal leader Zach Churchill.

Asked about the timing of his announcement and whether a role in provincial politics was in his future, Fraser said that wasn’t on his mind Monday.

“That’s not what today’s about but frankly I’m flattered by the suggestion,” Fraser said. “Today is a decision I’ve made for personal reasons because my kids aren’t getting any younger and deserve to have their dad around.”

Fraser did say he will continue to “remain engaged” in politics moving forward and is open to new opportunities.
