Man charged with two recent robberies

A man is being charged in two recent robberies.

Halifax Regional Police arrested the suspect Sunday morning after being called to the Hotel Halifax near Scotia Square just after 8:30 a.m.

They were told a man with what was believed to be a firearm demanded money from the staff at the reception desk, then ran off with the cash.

After a short pursuit, officers arrested a suspect and seized a replica firearm.

HRP say the man is also facing charges in relation to a January 4 robbery at the Windsor Street Sobeys.

In that incident, police say a man went into the grocery stores just before 6:30 p.m., stole some merchandise and threatened employees with a weapon before fleeing.

Mitchell Donald Heighton, 29, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of:

• Robbery (two counts)
• Possession of weapons for dangerous purpose (two counts)
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Resisting arrest
• Wearing a disguise with intent
• Breach of probation (four counts)
