Halifax RCMP say two men are facing several charges after an incident in Hubbards that began with a disagreement about elver fishing.

Police say around 1 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a call that a man had been assaulted with a weapon near Shore Club Road.

When they arrived at the scene, the officers discovered that a man had argued with a woman and a youth who were elver fishing.

A short time later, the man was approached by a group of seven people and was then assaulted by a man with a pipe.

Police say a second man was brandishing a knife and what appeared to be a conductive energy weapon.

After the assault, the group left the scene in three vehicles but was spotted by RCMP officers on St Margaret’s Bay Road.

The officers pulled all three vehicles over and arrested two men in connection with the earlier assault.

While searching the three vehicles, police seized a shotgun and a conductive energy weapon.

A search of the nearby roadway turned up a loaded shotgun that police believe was thrown away by the suspects before they were pulled over.

 A 45-year-old man is facing charges of:

  • Careless Use of a Firearm;
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized;
  • Assault;
  • Assault with a Weapon

A 48-year-old man has been charged with the following:

  • Careless Use of a Firearm;
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Both men have been released from custody on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court on June 5th.

Police are asking anyone with information on this incident to contact Halifax District RCMP or call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips App.
