Lunar New Year: Chinese Society of Nova Scotia sells out banquet

Sunday January 22 marks the beginning of Lunar New Year, the 15 day festival celebrating the new moon. This year’s zodiac is the Water Rabbit. A symbol of prosperity and peace.

“We want to wish everyone a happy New Year!” said members of the Chinese Society of Nova Scotia in a video statement.

This year, the Chinese Society of Nova Scotia is holding a banquet in early February. The Society was unable to hold the banquet in recent years due to COVID. To the pleasant surprise of the organizers, the event has already been sold out.

More than three hundred guests are expected at the event, including local business leaders and government representatives in addition to community members.

“Like all New Year observances in cultures and countries worldwide, Lunar New Year is a festival that fulfilled with great hope and aspirations for the coming year. The Chinese Society of Nova Scotia wishes you and your families good health, happiness, and prosperity,” said a statement from the Society.

Lunar New Year is Celebrated by people in different East Asian nations including China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea. It’s estimated that over 2 billion people world wide celebrate the holiday.

Those born in the year of the Rabbit are considered gentle and approachable, with decent noble and elegant manners. Previous years of the Rabbit have been: 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, and 2011.
