Loblaw going back to 50 per cent off discounts on expiring items

Loblaw, the company that operates Atlantic Superstore, has changed course on a controversial plan to lower its discount on last-day sale items.

Earlier this week, news broke that Loblaw would be lowering its discount from 50 per cent off to 30 per cent off.

In a statement to CityNews 95.7 on Friday evening, the company confirmed the reversal.

“We’ve listened to feedback from our customers and colleagues and are reverting (where it existed before) to the 50 per cent off discounts,” the statement from Loblaw Public Relations read.

Loblaw said the change had not yet been implemented in Atlantic Canada and will not be. Elsewhere in the country it said customers can expect to see a return of 50 per cent off stickers in the coming weeks.

The announcement comes one day after NDP House Leader Peter Julien told CityNews the Competition Bureau needed to take a look at what he called “clear gouging.”
