Juno Awards weekend finally arrives in Halifax

CITYnews halifax / By Steve Gow

Canada’s biggest music awards show will be in Halifax this weekend.

Hosted by award-winning singer Nelly Furtado, the 2024 Juno Awards will take place Sunday at Scotiabank Centre at 9 p.m. but first, the city will be seeing a weekend of music-filled events.

Some of that free entertainment includes the Juno Block Party series which continues Friday with five-time Juno nominee TALK and breakthrough group of the year nominee, Good Kid, both making their first stops in Halifax.

On Saturday, the Juno Block Party series wraps with a country-themed night, featuring Juno nominees the James Barker Band, with Halifax’s own Dave Sampson and others.

Both shows begin at 7 p.m. and take place in the parking lot next to Waterfront Warehouse down on Halifax’s Harbourfront.

There is plenty to do but sustainability was certainly on the minds of organizers and HRM.

The municipality is sponsoring the HalifACT Climate Stage, a net-zero powered stage at the Central Library offering free programming for all ages, powered by 10 pedal-powered bike generators and solar power provided by Star Power Atlantic.

Free bicycle tune-ups will also be available for attendees, provided by the Ecology Action Centre.

HRM also making efforts to reduce the climate impact of getting to Juno Awards events with a free, hop-on-hop-off Junos express shuttle bus service between music venues.

There will also be a shuttle running from both the Sackville and Portland Hills Transit Terminal to downtown Halifax on Saturday and Sunday from 3 p.m. to midnight.
