HRM under heat warning as temperatures soar

A heat warning is in effect for most of mainland Nova Scotia, including Halifax Regional Municipality.

Environment Canada says temperatures could reach 31 C in some areas today, with humidex values making it feel closer to 41 C.

Allister Aalders, 95.7’s weather specialist, says HRM is expecting a high of 27 C, with humidex values between 33 and 38 C.

“It doesn’t cool off a whole lot tonight. Twenty degrees is the low, so it’ll be uncomfortable sleeping if you don’t have air conditioning,” he said.

A cold front is expected to move through on Wednesday, but relief from the heat won’t be immediate. Aalders said temperatures will once again climb into the 30s.

“These temperatures are not record-breaking. We do experience periods of high heat and humidity throughout the summer,” he said.

Aalders expects temperatures to return to the mid-20s Wednesday night into Thursday.

Environment Canada is urging people to watch for early signs of heat-related illness, which can include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and extreme fatigue.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
