Left-turn traffic calming is coming to six intersections near you.

The safety measure implements temporary rubber speed bumps to slow down drivers and reduce their turning radius.

“These bumps will be installed as an extension of the centerline in a manner to encourage left-turning drivers to make a slower turn by driving around the speed bumps, and to approach the crosswalk at a more perpendicular angle instead of cutting across the intersection diagonally,” Halifax Regional Municipality explains on its website.

“Larger vehicles such as buses and trucks will track over the speed bumps, as required to navigate the intersection”

HRM will be piloting this at these locations:

  • South Park Street and Spring Garden Road
  • Lacewood Drive and Dunbrack Street
  • Lacewood Drive and Parkland Drive
  • Cobequid Road and Glendale Drive
  • Joseph Howe Drive and Dutch Village Road
  • Main Street and Major Street

Left-turn traffic calming is already used in other cities, including Toronto and New York City, “with promising results for increasing road safety,” HRM says.

Expect the temporary speed bumps to be installed here next month, however HRM says they’ll need to be removed before winter for snow clearing.
