NEWS RELEASE
HALIFAX REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY
*************************
At approximately 2:15 p.m. today, there was an incident at the Lake Major water treatment plant due to a mechanical malfunction with a crane.

Working with Halifax Water, Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency commenced a precautionary evacuation of the children attending day camps and day cares at the North Preston Community Centre due to a potential HAZMAT issue at the plant.

By 3:45 p.m. the mechanical issue with the crane was remedied, therefore the potential HAZMAT issue was resolved, the evacuation of the children was lifted, and they were returned to the centre or picked up by their parents/guardians.

Given the situation was resolved quickly, the plan for a broader evacuation notice for the wider community was cancelled.

The municipality and Halifax Water would like to thank the community for their patience and support during this incident.
