Halifax Water asks people to clear blocked storm drains ahead of rainfall

Storm drains can get clogged by fallen leaves, trash and other debris, potentially causing property damage

As a storm makes its way toward Nova Scotia, Halifax Water asks people to ensure fallen leaves and other debris are cleared from storm drains to prevent potential issues.

“We are asking customers to be mindful of potential localized flooding, which can result in property damage,” Halifax Water says in a news release. “This includes ensuring leaves are safely cleared from storm drains/catch basins near your property.”

People can also report a blocked storm drain by calling Halifax Water at 902-420-9287 or the city at 311.

Over the next couple of days and starting on Monday, Nova Scotia is likely to see 100 to 150 mm of rain.

Environment Canada says areas of Halifax and east along the coast could see gusts of up to 100km/h.

Out of 24,398 storm drains in the Halifax area, most of them are connected to the stormwater system which may drain directly into area waterways.

Other drains connect to the combined collection system — wastewater and stormwater — and, if clogged, may overflow.
