Frigid temperatures earlier this month resulted in freezing and burst pipes for many Nova Scotians

Cold temperatures are in the forecast this weekend.
As of Friday afternoon, the overnight lows into Saturday and Sunday are expected to be -16.
With that in mind, Halifax Water is reminding customers that freezing temperatures can cause issues with plumbing.
The water service lateral of a home usually enters in the basement or utility closet near the water meter.
The utility recommends making sure there’s a safe heat source in this area.
If you do lose water service during extreme cold, Halifax Water says to do the following:
- Check the Halifax Water website (halifaxwater.ca/notices) to see if there is a known water service outage in your area.
- If you are not impacted by a known water service outage, please contact our 24/7 emergency line at 902-420-9287.
- If there is not a known water service outage in your area, we recommend that you close the water shut-off valve controlling water flow inside your home. This can help minimize flooding from frozen, cracked, or split plumbing during caused by freezing temperatures.
Most can find their water shut-off valve near where the water line enters the home, between the entry point and the water meter.
If your shut-off valve doesn’t work, call Halifax Water at 902-420-9287.
