Halifax man charged after allegedly hitting police officer with ATV

Police in Halifax say an officer was taken to hospital after allegedly being struck by a man driving an ATV over the weekend.

Halifax Regional Police say at about 3 a.m. Saturday, an officer saw three ATVs being driven dangerously in the area of Dentith Road and Herring Cove Road.

“When the officer approached one of the ATVs to arrest the driver for dangerous operation of a conveyance, the driver attempted to flee the scene by reversing the vehicle and hitting the officer,” police said in a media release.

The officer managed to arrest the suspect a short distance away before being taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, Austin Henneberry, 18, is facing charges including impaired driving and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

He’s expected to appear in court at a later date.
