Halifax heat wave breaks over four decade long record

CITYnews halifax / By Natasha O’Neill

In its third day, the Nova Scotia heat wave broke a July 10 record.

In 1979 the hottest it had ever been on this day was 29.7 C. As of late Wednesday afternoon the Halifax Stanfield International Airport reported a temperature of 30.4 C — breaking the 45 year long record.

The historic normal temperature for July 10 is 23 C.

The heat wave that first descended on Halifax and the province started on Monday. The multi-day event has seen humidex values between 35 to 37.

While cooler temperatures can be expected along the coast, the national weather agency says people should reduce their heat risk and stay indoors when possible.

People, particularly children and pets, should never remain in parked vehicles during such heat events.
