Frightful forecast for Halloween this Sunday

RCMP are offering up tips to keep your trick-or-treaters safe

Expect the weather outside to be frightful this Sunday.

“It’s not good Halloween weather at all,” said CityNews 95.7 weather specialist John Wilson Friday morning.

“Rain and windy with another big low coming in and a southeast wind to 50 km/h,” he added. “Sixteen degrees and mild though, that’s the only plus.”

RCMP are recommending you take steps to help your child be visible in the dark, including adding some reflective tape to the costume, and giving them a flashlight a glow sticks.

“If your child is planning to wear a mask around their eyes, test it to make sure they can see in all directions. If possible, use face paint instead,” Mounties said in a news release.

Parents should also go over some basic traffic safety rules. If your kid is old enough to trick-or-treat without you, make sure they’re with a friend and they have an established route and know what time they’re expected to come back home.

“When kids have their route planned ahead of time, it can help avoid them getting lost,” said police.

RCMP also have tips for drivers:

• Avoid driving in residential areas if possible.
• If you must drive in residential areas, plan extra time to get to your destination and drive very slowly.
• Keep your eyes peeled for trick-or-treaters wearing dark clothing who may dart out in front of your vehicle requiring you to stop quickly.
• As always, wear a seat belt, drive sober and stay focused on the road ahead.
